Derby Day – What to Wear

Derby Day – the first day of Melbourne Cup Carnival – is an elegant affair with traditional monochrome black and white dress code. Derby Day is my favorite day of the carnival particularly because of the strict dress code. Every year I get excited about planning my outfit as well as curious about how far I can push dress code rules. Rules are meant to be slightly altered to reflect ones personal style and in my case a hint of colour instead of a usual pop of colour ties in perfectly with the black and white theme.

No matter how traditional or how out there you are planning your outfit to be for any race day there are some rules that you can never break and one of those rules is that you always have to wear a head piece. After all that’s what makes the racing fashion it’s own category. Head wear is a center piece of racing outfit whether modest or outrageous. Millinery is an important industry in Australian fashion and it particularly evolved in the last decade with new amazing designers coming on the scene and really revolutionizing this traditional industry. It’s not just mesh and flowers in a traditional fascinator shape. My pick this year – modern futuristic lazer cut head pieces in block colours. Elegant and a little edgy.
